June 2023

Jodi Kennedy was recognized with the James E. Scott Outstanding Mid-Level Student Affairs Professional Award by NASPA Region III.

April 2022

Dr. John Banter has been elected to serve on the Board of Directors for the Association of Leadership Educators (ALE), which is a national organization for those who teach, coach, and program within the field of leadership. Dr. Banter will serve a two-year term.

January 2022

Dr. Urkovia Andrews was recognized as the recipient of the Nadinne Cruz Community Engagement Professional award. Awarded by Campus Compact, the award celebrates ethical leadership and advocacy demonstrated by community engagement professionals.

July 2021

Dr. John Banter was recognized by the Association of Leadership Education (ALE) with the Robin Orr Outstanding Leadership Practitioner Award. The award recognizes a distinguished practitioner for their significant accomplishments and contributions to leadership education and related fields.

Jodi Kennedy was recognized by the Division of Student Affairs’ Professional Engagement Committee with the Big Cheese Award for someone who shows exemplary leadership.


April 2020

Dr. Urkovia Andrews was recognized with a University Award of Excellence for Collaboration. The Collaboration Award recognizes and promotes those who are dedicated to service to their departments, students, faculty, other departments on campus and the surrounding community through communication, innovation, integrity and inclusion.

Dr. John Banter was recognized with a University Award of Excellence for Teaching. The Teaching Award acknowledges those that improve student learning and prepare students to compete in the global marketplace.

Jodi Kennedy was recognized with a University Award of Excellence for the Team Award, recognizing the Commencement Work Group.


February 2020

Dr. Urkovia Andrews was recognized by the Office of Multicultural Affairs as the Georgia Southern Alumni recipient of the “Shine, Black Girl, Shine” Black Women Empowerment Award.


October 2019

The Southern Leaders Coaching Program was selected as the Outstanding Student Learning Program by the Georgia College Personnel Association (GCPA).


April 2019


Dr. Urkovia Andrews was recognized with the 2019 Black Heritage Celebration Month Outstanding Alumni Award presented by the Office of Multicultural Affairs.



John Banter, our Associate Director, was recognized with an award by Georgia Southern University’s College of Education for the research he presented at the recent Research Symposium.


March 2019

The Southern Leaders Program was selected as a Gold Award Winner for the Student Union, Student Activities, Greek Life, Leadership, and related category by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).


July 2018

Southern Leaders was the recipient of the 2018 Association of Leadership Educators (ALE) Outstanding Program of the Year Award.

John Banter, Associate Director, and John Egan, Leadership Educator, were also recognized with the ALE conference’s Distinguished Educator Workshop for their presentation titled “Escape Rooms: A Student-Centered Approach to Animating Leadership Learning”.
