Our History

Our Story

In mid-March 2020 we canceled our Alternative Spring Break trips in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the first time we have canceled trips to that scale. Nationally, the world of Alternative Breaks was turned upside down. Now, we are working on rebuilding our program.

We have continued to adapt our program as only Alternative Breakers know how to do. In Spring 2021, we began offering “StayBreaks” for our students to take part in. StayBreaks provide an opportunity for students to volunteer locally over a weekend while being able to spend their evenings at home. Still issue-focused, still direct and meaningful service, but delivered in a way that ensures the safety and accessibility of our Breakers and those we are serving.

In Spring 2022, we began reintroducing weeklong volunteer trips back into our schedule. We will keep StayBreaks around, but we are excited to have our weeklong experiences going again!

We are so glad to be continuing our program’s mission of, “Creating a community of Active Citizens by empowering students to make a global impact through life-changing service opportunities.”

Alumni

What can be said about the people who have made our program truly what it is? You, our alumni, are everything that makes this program special. It is because of you that we have been able to continue to provide life-changing service opportunities since 2006. Your passion for service and experiential learning has driven this program to reach new heights, to travel to new places, and to come to expect great things when a team of Georgia Southern students heads out into the world. We are grateful, humbled, and so excited to continue to engage with you in new and exciting ways as Alternative Breaks Alumni.

Please reach out to the Alternative Breaks Coordinator, Kasie Thompson kasiethompson@georgiasouthern.edu, to share your experience, reconnect with the program, or share photos or videos from your Break!
