NPHC Convocation
The National Pan-Hellenic Council hosts a mandatory open forum, NPHC Convocation, for interested students at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semester. Students have two opportunities to attend NPHC Convocation in an academic year, once in September and once in February. Convocation allows individuals to receive a wealth of information as each chapter gives a brief background on their national and chapter history, shares their involvement on campus as well as in the local community, and answers questions you may have about the organization’s requirements. Convocation is also an opportunity for the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life to discuss important information about hazing guidelines, the challenges of joining a Greek-lettered organization, and the various guidelines specific to joining a fraternity or sorority at GSU.
NPHC chapters recruit members at various times of the year through a Membership Intake Process (MIP). Chapters determine their own recruitment period which can change from year to year. MIP generally begins with an interest meeting, which are formal sessions where aspirants will typically learn specific information about membership requirements, chapter policies, and financial cost. Interest meetings are followed by a period of membership education. The membership process culminates with initiation and a probate, or “coming-out” show in which the organization’s new members are revealed to the community.
Please note: to be eligible for intake, you must attend Convocation in the Fall or Spring of the academic year and meet all requirements.

Business casual attire is strictly enforced. No jeans, no shorts, no sandals or sneakers, and no short dresses or skirts for women.
- For men:
- Shirts: Long-sleeved or short-sleeved button-downs and collared shirts are required.
- Blazers and jackets: While not necessary, you may wear a well-cut blazer or jacket.
- Pants and slacks: Dress slacks or chino pants (commonly known as khakis, either plain or neutral-colored like black, gray, tan, or dark-toned colors.
- Shoes: Loafers or dress shoes are appropriate.
- For women:
- Skirts and dresses: Dresses and skirts must be knee-length (or below) are required. Avoid skirts and dresses that are too tight and too low.
- Pants and slacks: Tailored or wide-leg pants, dress pants, chinos, or suit pants are appropriate, either plain or neutral-colored like black, gray, tan, or dark-toned colors.
- Blazers and jackets: While not necessary, you may wear a well-cut blazer or jacket.
- Blouses and button-downs: Nicely fitted, flowy, and/or ironed blouses or button-down are mandatory
- Shoes: Closed-toe heels, flats, or loafers.
Is attendance at Convocation required to join an NPHC organization?
Yes. Attendance is a requirement for participants interested in joining an NPHC chapter.
Should I get to Convocation early?
Yes. To ensure you are able to check-in and be seated in a timely manner, it is highly suggested that you arrive 15-30 minutes before doors open.
What should I bring to Convocation?
You must bring your student ID in order to check-in. Although it is not required, you may want to bring a pen or pencil and something to write on.
Can I be turned away from attending Convocation if I am not in business casual attire?
Yes. Business casual attire is required. Therefore, please come dressed appropriately.
Will I receive more information in regards to Convocation after I purchase my ticket?
Yes. After purchasing a ticket, you will receive a follow up email about Convocation.
Can I purchase two tickets? One for my friend and one for myself?
No. You may only purchase a ticket for yourself because each ticket requires an individuals’ personal information.
Am I able to receive a refund for my ticket?
No. All ticket purchases are final.
Will I be able to attend Convocation if I happen to arrive late?
No. Doors close promptly at the time specified on the flyer.
What is the difference between attending Convocation in the Fall versus Spring?
Fall attendance is good for the entire academic year (Fall & Spring), therefore, you would not have to attend during the Spring semester. Spring attendance would only cover the spring semester.
