This past week during Spring Break – The Georgia Southern University Mock Mediation Team with Two Fraternity men from Tau Kappa Epsilon (Dylan John & Jonathan Quintyne) together with two other Georgia Southern students (Jessica Shanken & Tashai Gilman) achieved one of the highest honors in the world for Mediation as described below.
The Georgia Southern Mock Mediation Team placed 2nd at the International Collegiate Mediation Tournament last fall and as one of the Top 4 undergraduate teams in the world, was invited to compete at the International Law School Mediation Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa.
The undergraduate teams are considered underdogs in a Law School (Graduate Level) tournament – This is where Law school from across the world, send their best and their brightest to compete on behalf of their law schools and countries. Undergraduate teams are provided this opportunity to be exposed to the highest level of International competition in Mediation.
Georgia Southern surprised everyone when we performed extremely well at the preliminary stage and broke into the Semi-Finals for both the Advocacy and Mediation categories. Lawyers at the competition started saying – “Although very unlikely, it would be interesting to see an undergraduate team make it to the Finals”
Georgia Southern University convincingly beat the Indian Law School Mediation Team at the Semi-Finals to earn its place in the Finals
At the Finals, Georgia Southern was up against a Canadian Team and performed extremely well to go on to win the title of “Top Advocacy Team in the World” – For the first time in the history of the competition, an undergraduate team qualified to compete at the Finals and won over all the law schools from around the world.
