OSA Consultation & Workshop Requests

The Office of Student Activities professional staff and graduate assistants are available for any student organization or organization leader needing assistance. Whether your organization is planning an event, struggling to log service hours on Eagle Engage or looking for some advice, our staff are here to help you have a successful year. We provide resources and support to all student organizations. We serve to connect organizations to students and each other. We are available to help equip officers with the necessary resources to run effective organizations through workshops & training’s. Our staff will tailor workshops, presentations, and training’s to best fit your needs. Whether you need an us to speak to a new member class, lead leadership development activities, or assist your officers in planning an event, the our office is here to assist. Our staff members are available for a consultation to discuss anything that can assist you in your organization’s success. OSA is also available to present a number of workshops for your student organization, class, or any other meeting you feel would benefit from an outside facilitator. Simply fill out the workshop request form online and a GA or staff member will reach out to you within 2 business days. Please note workshop requests must be made at least 3 weeks in advance of your desired date.

Balance & Time Management
As organizations, you must remember to always balance work and school. Prioritizing your work and tasks will help you with managing your time to solely focus on your organization.

Conflict Management
Conflict management is the practice of recognizing and dealing with disputes in a rational, balanced, and effective way. Conflict management implemented within an organization usually involves effective communication, problem solving abilities, and good teamwork skills to restore the focus to the organization’s overall mission.

Effective Communication
In an organization, it can be difficult trying to listen to each individual and their idea. It is important to develop skills and alternative ways to effectively communicate with one another so that everyone can be heard.

Engaging Your Membership
As members of your organization, you built a community of individuals who share the same passions and interests. It is important to engage them at all times. This means to reach out, make your members a part of your organization and processes, and make them feel vested in the outcome.

Financial Management
Your organization must be responsible when money and resources are involved. It is important to plan, direct, monitor, organize, and control the monetary resources of your organization.

Getting Involved in the Community
Your organization should make a name for itself not only on campus, but off campus also. Community involvement is an expression generally used to refer to the contributions of an individual or individuals to the community in which they reside. This may involve volunteer work, promotion of social causes, or donations to local charities.

Health & Wellness
Keep in mind that your member’s health and wellness comes first! Health and wellness mean the ability to live life fully with vitality and meaning. Wellness is optimal health and vitality, encompassing physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, interpersonal and social, and environmental well-being.

Inclusivity
In an organization, it is important to include every member in every decision and/or action. Remember to not discriminate against any thought, idea, or suggestion. You are all a part of your organization for a reason.

Leadership Development
 As student organizations, it’s important to develop the leadership of your organization by strengthening the connection between, and alignment of, the efforts of individual leaders and the systems through which they influence organizational operations. Leadership development builds on the growth of individuals to become leaders and focuses on the interpersonal linkages between the individuals in the team.

Leadership Inventory Assessment (e.g. StrengthsQuest, True Colors, etc.)
Self-discovery and self-awareness are essential to developing our capacity to lead. These assessments help the individuals to discover how they can most effectively benefit their student organizations using their strengths or leadership styles.

Marketing & Public Relations
Developing successful marketing and public relations strategies are essential for increasing event attendance. Creating and implementing solid marketing plans will help ensure that your organization’s events are successful and well-attended.

Officer Transition
Ensuring a smooth transition of the executive leadership in your organization at the end of an academic year is an important part of preparing your organization for the upcoming school year. Having a reliable plan for organization elections and leadership transition will ensure that your organization is able to maintain effective leadership after former leaders have left.

Organization Morale
In an organization, it can be difficult trying to ensure the group morale is always high. It is important to develop and incorporate activities or opportunities that will help members to relax or distress.

Organizational Management
Having good management and leadership is essential for successful communication and event planning within your student organization. Having regular meetings and communicating necessary information to all organization members will be an important part of good organizational management.

Peer Leadership
In an organization, it’s important to have peer leaders in your organization that can serve as mentors and role models for the new members. This leadership will help you to ensure that the new members feel welcomed and understand the mission or purpose of your organization 

Professional Communication/Correspondence
Proper communication between members involved in your student organization is vital in ensuring successful planning of club events and recruitment. Developing expectations such as email response time will ensure that all students and faculty are on the same page for communication expectations within your organization. Professional communication to people outside your membership is also essential to effective event planning and organization success.

Recruitment & Retention
Both recruitment and retention are equally important processes that are vital to ensuring a growing membership for your student organization. Implementing successful marketing strategies will assist in ensuring a strong recruitment season. It will also be important to inform current and potential members of club expectations and requirements to ensure successful retention.

Risk Management & Event Planning
Proper event planning involves the development of a detailed risk management plan, in order to plan for any potential issues that may arise during the event. Meeting with your advisor and members regularly during the event planning process discussing these potential issues will be essential to ensuring a successful event.

Running an Effective Meeting
Running an effective meeting with limited disruption is essential to ensuring that all organization members remain focused on the agenda for that meeting. Additionally, leaving time at the end of the meeting for members to voice any concerns or suggestions will help to ensure that everyone has a chance to participate in discussion at the meeting.

Service
As organizations, you must remember to serve the community to which you belong.  This can incorporate doing service projects or events  such as Habitat for Humanity and Breast Cancer Awareness programs that will benefit the organization, Georgia Southern University, and the community.

Social Justice & Diversity
As student organizations, it  is important  to recognizes that an individual’s identities, including but not limited to race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, ability, class and ideology, are influences of their involvement in your organization and quality of life.  Organizations can promote equity, respect, and social justice through their programs and campus outreach. This helps the organization to foster an inclusive organization and campus environment.

Team Building
It can be hard to manage all the different personalities of your members. It is helpful to incorporate activities or assessments that will increase understanding of team dynamics and improve how the team works together. 

Translating Your Leadership/Involvement
Organizational involvement is known to help students become well-rounded individuals by providing them with transferable skills and growth opportunities.  It is important for students to learn and understand how to translate that information onto resumes and cover letters and into interviews.
