Title IX & Sexual Misconduct

Title IX Coordinator

Each institution must publicly identify the Title IX Coordinator. This is the individual at the institution who is responsible for taking reports of sexual misconduct and providing support and resources to those who believe they have experienced sexual misconduct. Anyone can speak with the Title IX Coordinator to learn more about:

  • Reporting options if you know someone who has or believe you have experienced sexual misconduct;
  • Ways to address your report if you have filed one or someone filed a report on your behalf. Options include keeping the report on file up to and including requesting an institutional investigation (this is separate from a police investigation);
  • Academic and personal support and resources available to you through the institution. This includes interim measures and accommodations (For a list of interim measures and accommodations, see the Office of Equal Opportunity & Title IX webpage);
  • Sexual misconduct policies and procedures.

Title IX/Sexual Misconduct Policy

What Is Title IX?

Title IX is a federal civil rights law that applies to K-12 and higher education institutions. It is a gender equity law that states institutions cannot discriminate against anyone based on sex. It extends to those who experience sexual misconduct. Recent Title IX law also provides instructions for how institutions handle and respond to reports of sexual misconduct.

Institutional Sexual Misconduct Policy

Georgia Southern University follows the Board of Regents’ Sexual Misconduct Policy. This policy provides definitions for prohibited conduct, addresses how institutions handle reports of sexual misconduct, defines policies related to retaliation and amnesty, and provides information related to investigations and resolutions to reports, among others. Additionally, if a sexual misconduct complaint occurs between students at two separate institutions within the University System of Georgia, it can be investigated under this system policy.

More information about the Sexual Misconduct Policy can be found on the Office of Equal Opportunity & Title IX webpage and the Board of Regents website.

What Does Sexual Misconduct Include?

Sexual misconduct can take a variety of forms, and includes:

  • Sexual assault (nonconsensual sexual contact or penetration)
  • Sexual harassment
  • Dating violence
  • Domestic violence
  • Stalking
  • Sexual exploitation

A full definition for each of these regulations can be found on the Office of Equal Opportunity & Title IX webpage.
