Behavior Assessment Team
What is BAT?
The Behavior Assessment Team (BAT) meets regularly to assess and create action plans for students or student groups who present disturbing behavior in our community. The team members are responsible for identifying students or student groups who display disturbing behavior, offering suggestions on how to manage the behavior or student crisis, and implementing a plan to manage and/or resolve the situation. Any campus community member may refer a student or student group to the Behavior Assessment Team.
What does BAT do?
The BAT reviews referrals from the University community made by faculty, staff, students and others. These referrals range from student support needs to perceived or actual threats of harm toward self or others. The team determines the best course of action in these situations and makes recommendations for appropriate intervention(s).
When should I refer students to BAT?
Any time there is an observed behavior by a community member that causes the referred concern but is not an immediate threat needing police involvement, please contact the Dean of Students Office or the Counseling Center. If there is an immediate threat of harm to self or others, please contact the University Police.
When should I refer to BAT?
A referral should be made to BAT if an individual display the following behaviors:
- Threat of harm toward self or others
- Speaking or writing that seems bizarre
- Drug/alcohol use to a dangerous level
- Suicidal ideation
- Violent fantasy content
- Anger problems
- Fascination with weapons
- Homicidal ideation
- Stalking
- Obsession with previous shooting situations
- Victim/martyr self-concept
- Paranoia
- Violence and cruelty
- Mental health history related to dangerousness
- Unusual interest in police, military, terrorist activities and materials
