Nutrition and Food Science

The Nutrition and Food Science major applies principles of nutrition to plan and supervise the preparation of meals in various public and private institutions. The mission of the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) is to promote the integration of knowledge in nutrition and food science and to develop leadership and critical thinking skills necessary for achievement of excellence in the profession of dietetics. The DPD at Georgia Southern leads to Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Nutrition and Food Science. The DPD curriculum is focused heavily in the basic sciences (chemistry, anatomy and physiology, mathematics, microbiology, and biochemistry). Professional coursework includes Professional Practice Strategies, Introductory Food Science, Human Nutrition, Life Cycle Nutrition, Meal Management, Advanced Food Science, Quantity Food Practicum, Community Nutrition, Metabolic Nutrition, Experimental Food Science, and Medical Nutrition Therapy. There is also the option to get further education and certification after you earn you bachelor’s degree. There is the Registered Dietitian (RD) and the Dietetic Technician (DTR). These are legally protected titles. Individuals with these credentials have completed specific academic and supervised practice requirements, successfully completed a national registration examination, and maintained requirements for recertification.
