Construction Engineering
Major Information
Construction engineers are equipped to design and oversee the construction, maintenance, and rebuilding of infrastructural facilities such as roads, bridges, airports, buildings, and water treatment facilities in ways that best meet the unique demands of a particular environment. Construction engineers will often work with, and coordinate a team including civil engineers and construction managers to solve technical challenges of complex construction projects. While a civil engineer generally focuses on design, and the construction manager focuses on the management of time and resources, the construction engineer bridges the gap between these two professions with additional engineering, technical and management skills necessary for the efficient and safe delivery of complex projects. You will need to have strong analytical skills and an ability to function in an interdisciplinary team environment.
A construction engineer wears many hats when directing and assessing a project. You will survey the area where the job is to be built, paying special attention to environmental issues or government regulations (such as building codes) that are involved so you can prepare reports on your findings and consult with others involved in the project, such as environmental groups, governmental agencies, and third-party construction companies.
