Who We are


Cami Sockow- Sustainability Coordinator

Cami is a Georgia transplant from Southern Illinois, but a Michigan native. She received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. After finishing her Bachelors in Leisure Services Management with a focus in Outdoor Leadership in 2012, she taught experiential learning in Southeast Minnesota. She then returned to SIUC and obtained her Master’s degree in Geography and Environmental Resources with a focus in Sustainability. Her role consists of managing our student sustainability leaders to help educate and illuminate sustainability issues, while overseeing all sustainability events/programming on the Statesboro campus. She also manages the sustainability grant program and builds partnerships across campus to elevate sustainability within their departments. She resides in Savannah and is actively engaged in her community through co-chairing two non-profits: the Savannah Urban Garden Alliance and the Climate Reality Project.


Isabella NelsonCampus Community Garden Graduate Assistant

Isabella is from Gainesville, FL. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from Asbury University. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Public Health. Her role as the graduate assistant is to manage and maintain the Campus Community Garden. She is excited to teach students about the fundamental skills of gardening and sustainability. She is passionate about being able to use natural resources and to teach others how to do the same.

Blaine GaineyAthletics Sustainability Graduate Assistant

I am Blaine Gainey from Rentz, Georgia. I am a second-year graduate student getting my Master of Public Health in Environmental Health Sciences. In my free time, I like to hike, kayak, and visit state parks. My interests in sustainability stem from my love of nature and desire to protect our planet and its limited resources for ourselves and future generations.

Kirsten Mengell- STARS Graduate Assistant

I am from California, but I relocated from upstate New York. I have a Master’s of Public Health with a concentration in Data and Analytics. I am currently a Doctor of Public Health student in the community health and education concentration. I am passionate about community-engaged research and action as well as addressing systemic inequities including the environmental health disparities with sustainable food and living solutions.

Zinia Chowdhury- Outreach and Events Graduate Assistant

I am Zinia Chowdhury, born in Saudi Arabia and raised in Bangladesh. I am a graduate student in the department of Electrical Engineering and am passionate about sustainability. I have been working with startups that support sustainable development goals for more than five years. Always buttressed the idea of doing something for the community hence, sustainability comes down the line. I am serving in the Programs – Outreach and Education for the Sustain Southern.
Previously, I was one of the Innovators of Young SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Innovators Programme by the United Nations Global Compact (2019-2020) and represented my country Bangladesh in the international YSIP Global event in 2020. I have one publication and was awarded to be one of the authors of the best journal paper of the 10th Global Engineering Science and Technology Conference. 
Besides all this, I am keen to travel and a lover of nature, have a creative mind and am impassioned to turn my creative ideas into a reality. I love my family and my cats, otherwise known as the girl with the name of a flower! 

Cassandra Rowicki
Student Assistant

I was born in Tampa, FL, but I grew up in Alpharetta, GA. I’m a junior with an Interdisciplinary Studies major. So my focuses are in environmental sustainability and business with a minor in management. I am super interested in green technology and renewable energy sources. I became interested in sustainability in my junior year of high school. It’s was all thanks to my amazing environmental science teacher who inspired me to pursue a career in the sustainability field.
