Fall Weekend Break- Applications Open!

Social Issue: Environmental Awareness

($25.00) – all inclusive price

Students on this Alternative Break will be helping with various land management tasks to assist in the re-establishment of a Nature Center and Wildlife Sanctuary. Work will involve controlling hardwood trees and loblolly pine trees, pruning, working on deep swamp access roads, and planting longleaf seedlings.  Strap on your work boots, this trip will be a hands on adventure! This break travels November 10th-12th, 2017.

Break Title: #HolidayHelpers

Social Issue: Community Development & Disability Access

Cost: $150.00

Breakers will see the fruits of their labor through this experience. Students will be working in hard hats and boots to improve housing standards for homeowners. Breakers will be immersed in a variety of construction projects that require physical strength and stamina. Want to be a helping hand? You can join the movement and help this community achieve the goal of independent home ownership in their neighborhood.

Social Issue: Multiple Issues

Cost: $150.00

*Freshman Focused Break*

This Alternative Break experience will allow participants to gain perspective on diverse social issues from a variety of organizations within a host city. Breakers will participate in different projects and programs as well as engage in local community projects. Impact in this community will extend far beyond what a single alternative break experience can offer!


Break Title: #HurricanesAndHabitats

Social Issue: Hurricane Repair/Beach Clean-Up

Cost: $150.00

Environmental health is directly related to the well-being of a wide variety of species that inhabit an area. Do you have a passion for restoring natural habitats? Participants will work with an organization that focuses on educating the public on the local environment and the many animals that call this area home. Past hurricanes have inflicted serious damage to this area and they are searching for strong hands and dedicated volunteers to rebuild this coastal location.


Break Title: #AdoptDontShop

Social Issue: Animal Rights

Cost: $150.00

Are you a self-proclaimed cat-person? Maybe you’re more of a dog advocate? Spend your week helping to care for animals with a non-profit volunteer-run shelter. Work alongside these passionate volunteers to run the day-to-day operations, learn about the importance of animal welfare, and help some fur babies find their forever homes.


Break Title: #EaglesGoGreen

Social Issue: Sustainable Living

Cost: $150.00

Alternative Breaks and the Center for Sustainability team up for this thought provoking and educational experience. Students will immerse themselves into the world of food security and sustainable food growth. Breakers will be a small part of this organization’s mission to end poverty and world hunger. On this break we will learn how organizations and communities can team up to make a difference on a global scale through investing in local farming efforts.


Break Title: #PeaceLoveAndArt

Social Issue: Art & Education

*This break will require participants to have a passport. Passport fees will be the responsibility of the applicant.*

Cost: $500.00

Art is a powerful tool that can unify and bring people together. This Alternative Break experience will work with a community partner that focuses on education and community development through; music, dance, art, and cultural programs. What better way to come together than through the power of the arts? Breakers will see first-hand the positive impact a grassroots effort can have in reinvigorating a community previously impacted by war.

The Georgia Southern Alternative Break program operates with an “issue first” focus, meaning we keep our site locations quiet until Site Reveal each break cycle so you can focus on selecting a social issue you are passionate about first and foremost during the application process. This is true for all week long breaks across the program.
