 Upward Bound College Tours: March 2008 |
In March during their spring break from high school, participants toured several colleges and universities. They toured Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC, the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, NC, North Carolina A & T in Greensboro, NC. Also some participants toured Georgia State University in Atlanta, Clayton College in Morrow, Atlanta Metropolitan College, Morehouse, and Spelman college in Atlanta. In April, Upward Bound seniors traveled to Phillips Arena in Atlanta to participate in a special TRIO event sponsored by an Atlanta Hawks organization. The students were among 500 other TRIO students from across the state. The students listened to guest speakers and were informed about various careers associated within a sports’ organization. Also, the students watched a professional basketball game between the Atlanta Hawks and the Boston Celtics. Definitely, the students enjoyed the event. In May, the Upward Bound Program will have 44 graduates and they are all ready to go to college. Among those graduating, William Jackson from Swainsboro High School has been awarded an academic scholarship to Claflin University for $3,000.00 a year. Jonesia Lucas and Britney Mingle were inducted into the National Honors Society at Screven County High School. Kristina Johnson was named Star Student at Claxton High School and several others were named as honor graduates. |
