Leslie Harris

Coordinator for Academic Success 

Leslie Harris is the Academic Advisor for Student Support Services. She provides academic and social support to those students who identify as first-generation, low-income, and/or are students with disabilities. Leslie received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from Illinois College in 2014, and her Master of Science in College Student Personnel Administration from Illinois State University in 2016. Leslie joined TRiO’s Student Support Services program while at Illinois College, that assisted her with her statuses as a first-generation, low-income college student. Leslie is originally from Chicago Heights, IL.


Penny Hendrix

Success Coach and Tutor

Penny Hendrix is a Success Coach and Tutor for Student Support Services. She coaches students who identifies as a first-generation student, low income student, or as a student with a disability through their collegiate experience at Georgia Southern University. Penny received her Bachelor of Science in Education with a minor in Special Education at Georgia Southern. She has worked for 20 years in the area of Disability and Student Support Services.


Janet O’Brien

Success Coach and Tutor 

Janet O’Brien is a Success Coach and Tutor for Student Support Services. She helps students who identify as first-generation, income-eligible, and/or are students with a disability. Janet received her Bachelor of Science in Math Education and Master of Education in Mathematics at Georgia Southern. She has worked for over 30 years teaching and supporting students at Georgia Southern.

Marysol Ramirez  

Coordinator for Student Engagement 

Marysol Ramirez is the Coordinator of Student Engagement for Student Support Services. She develops and employs strategies to keep students engaged with the SSS program. Marysol Received her Bachelor of Arts in General Studies with concentrations in Sociology and Fine Arts as well as her Master of Science in Higher Education Administration from National University.  Marysol has been familiar with TRIO programs since her acceptance in Upward Bound as a first generation college student. Marysol joins us from San Fernando, California where she worked in higher education servicing students in multiple capacities for over eleven years


Abriah Frasier

Administrative Assistant 

Abriah Frasier is the Administrative Assistant for Student Support Services. She provides administrative support for the SSS office staff as well as the program participants. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in English as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in Modern Languages with a Spanish concentration. Abriah is a first-generation college student who understands the significance of receiving excellent support while pursuing a college degree. She is also the mother of a TRiO – Educational Talent Search student. She has worked for 4 plus years in Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Georgia Southern University.

Carla Ortiz

Graduate Assistant

Carla Ortiz is the Graduate Assistant for America Reads (AR) and America Counts (AC) programs within the Department of Educational Opportunity Programs/ Student Support Services. She is a first year graduate student pursuing a Master in Healthcare Administration (MHA) here at Georgia Southern University. Originally from Valdosta, Ga., Carla received her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Valdosta State University in 2015. She is a theme park enthusiast and spends lots of time at Disney World and Universal Studios. When not in class or studying, she enjoys spending time with friends, reading Harry Potter, drinking coffee, and working out. She plans on pursuing a career in health administration and management and aspires to be CEO of a hospital.

Aisha Hill

Student Ambassador

Aisha is a junior Health Education and Promotion Major. She aspires to attend graduate school to obtain her Masters in Nursing.She is a member of Omega Phi Alpha National Service Sorority and Southern Leaders



 Angelica Pham

Student Ambassador

Angelica Pham is currently in her second year at Georgia Southern University as a nursing major. She was born in Chicago, Illinois and aspires to become a domestic and international traveling nurse and hopes to eventually become a nurse educator. She is a member of the Student Nurses Associations and is an advocate for being more environmentally friendly and enjoys being a mentor for her peers. The majority of her free time consists of friends, volunteering, playing with dogs, and experimenting artistically.



Melina Gunby

Student Ambassador

Melina Gunby is a third-year honors student studying psychology and criminal justice. She is a member of Omega Phi Alpha, a national service sorority, and an Honors ambassador. Her favorite color is grey and she has a grey cat that she rescued. She survives on coffee and spin classes and reads the Harry Potter books once a year. She plans to pursue a Ph.D. in psychology after undergrad. Her goal is to go to all 50 states before she graduate; she has already been to over half. She also wants to travel to as many countries as she can.
