How will students who have legitimate reasons for being absent on the first day of classes be able to present these reasons and avoid having their class dropped?

24 hours prior to the first class meeting, students may go into their MyGeorgiaSouthern account and complete the Exception Request form. This form will require the student to provide student identification information, course information, reason for being absent, and date that the student expects to be able to attend the class. In lieu of completing the information on the web site, students may call the WINGS Help line (912.478.0735), the Registrar’s Office (912.478.5152), or the instructor. Students who present legitimate reasons for absence which can be documented will not have their class dropped. An email will be sent to the instructor sharing the information presented by the student in the web form or through the phone call. Students should view their class schedule in MyGeorgiaSouthern or WINGS to determine if their class was dropped or not. Students requesting an exception must submit the documentation for the excuse to the Registrar’s Office no later than 2 weeks following the first class meeting.

How will the waitlist work?

If a class is full, students will be able to register for the waitlist through their WINGS account just like registering for an open seat. The same restrictions in place for registration will be in place for waitlisting. Students will not be able to waitlist for class for which they have not met the prerequisite, or for which they are already registered for another section, or for which they are registered for another course at the same time. Students registering for the waitlist will be given priority to seats that become available in the class on a first come, first served basis. Students will receive a message on their MyGeorgiaSouthern login page when a seat has become available in a class they are waitlisted for. They will have 10 hours in which to respond and be registered based on the permission they have been given. Therefore, students who are on waitlists should check their MyGeorgiaSouthern accounts regularly.

How does this change attendance verification?

Students will still need to make sure that their attendance in class is verified. They may view this in their WINGS account. Faculty will need to verify attendance on the first day the class meets. Previously, faculty may not have verified until 2nd or 3rd meeting in the first week. After the first day of class, faculty will only need to verify those students who have added after the first day.

How can attendance verification be made easier for large classes?

A process using ID card readers and uploading attendance information to Banner has been developed. The process has been done successfully using a PC or lap top with a mag-stripe reader. Various other devices for capturing the ID card information ( i. e. more portable devices such as Palms and Clickers (lecture surveying/feedback tool) that are already used in some classrooms) are being considered. The use of Broadband and Wireless technology are being considered.

What if I am accidentally dropped?

Students who are dropped from the class because of incorrect reporting of attendance should try to re-register for the course immediately. If no seats are available, the student should register for the waitlist and then notify the instructor of the error and seek assistance in getting back into the class.

What should a student do if he/she is scheduled to graduate and a course is needed to complete graduation requirements and the class if full and has a waitlist?

If the student’s reason for not having already registered for the course is extenuating, the student should work through his or her advisor to request the Department Chair for the course to give the student an override into the class.
