SVA – Statesboro Campus

The Student Veterans of America serves veterans and their families by providing them with a community on campus and a professional network for them to achieve academic excellence.

Our mission is to provide student veterans with the resources they need during their transition from military life into the college environment. As a nationally recognized organization, we provide our members with volunteer opportunities, peer mentorship, education benefit assistance, and a strong presence that represents them within their community, both on and off campus. Through purpose and direction, we aim to bring an inclusive and immersive experience for our veterans here at Georgia Southern University.

Devon Dashnaw President of the SVA

Devon Dashnaw is a US Army Veteran. He served for four years as a Combat Medic Specialist at Fort Stewart, where his favorite service experiences included teaching his junior soldiers BLS, providing medical coverage for various field operations, and working as an on-call EMT for Fort Stewart’s hospital. Since getting out of the Army in 2020, Devon is now a senior pursuing two Bachelor’s Degrees in Psychology and Biochemistry. After graduation, Devon plans to continue taking care of others through getting his MD and working as a Psychiatrist, specifically in behavioral therapy. When he is not busy studying and working with the SVA, Devon enjoys visiting historical sites and local museum exhibits.

Alexandra Reece Vice President

SGT Alexandra Reece is a combat medic currently serving as the platoon sergeant for her ICU section in the US Army Reserves. Over her seven years in the Army, she has served across the United States, been on rotations through Europe, and was deployed to Afghanistan with the Engineers in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. Her favorite experiences over the course of her service have been training the Romanian Army in battlefield medicine, learning from surgeons and PAs in various clinics, and working outside of FOBs in Afghanistan with other countries’ militaries.

Since coming home from Afghanistan, Alex decided it was finally time to go back to school. She is a double major in Biochemistry and Writing & Linguistics, and is also pursuing a Minor in French. In addition to serving as the Vice President of the SVA Statesboro, she is a member of the Honors College, the Student Government Association (where she serves as the Honors College Senator), the Student Conduct Board, and Phi Delta Epsilon Pre-Medical Fraternity; she is also a Lab TA in the Chemistry Department and a Resident Advisor in Watson Hall. Post-graduation from Georgia Southern, Alex hopes to attend an MD/PhD program through the Army’s Health Professions Scholarship Program, and to continue her service to her nation as a Trauma Surgeon.
