Welcome back Cookout/High Rope Course (August 2017)

This year, the MVSC held a welcome back event with a cookout and a high rope course offered here at Southern Adventures. With over 50 students participating, the MVSC allowed the newest members of TEAM EAGLE the opportunity to not only face their fears, but also have fun with both the Student Veterans Association and Eagle Battalion Cadets.

Southern’s Orientation, Advisement, and Registration (SOAR)

This summer TEAM EAGLE participated in their second group of SOAR sessions here at Georgia Southern. The staff of the MVSC were able to meet hundreds of incoming students and their families during orientation. The MVSC staff worked diligently to ensure families were confident that Georgia Southern was the right place for their students.

The staff used the sessions to introduce the incoming students the campus and the services provided by the MVSC.

Eagles’ R&R (April 2017)

On April 30th, the Student Veteran Association and the Military and Veteran Student Center hosted the end of semester Eagles’ R&R. The event brought together the veterans, ROTC, and their families for an afternoon of free food, games and events.

Freedom Run 5K/10K (April 2017)

On early morning of April 22nd, the Georgia Southern ROTC hosted the annual Freedom Run 5K/10K. The participants came from all over Georgia and the MVSC also took a part in the event. The annual Freedom Run is to benefit the Georgia Southern ROTC program and the proceeds also benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation. The Folds of Honor Foundation provides educational scholarship to spouses and children of America’s fallen and disabled service-members.

Benning to Gordon Relay (March 2017)

On Saturday March 9th, a group of runners began their four day journey of 250+ miles from Ft. Benning to Ft. Gordon in the annual Benning to Gordon Relay. The relay was to raise money for Ft. Gordon Warrior Transition Battalion and the Fisher House. So far, the team has raised over $27,000 in the past five years for the organization. The members of the MVSC and the Student Veteran Association met with the group in Portal, Georgia where some members of the group ran a 3-mile segment of the relay with the runners.

 

MVSC Operation DODGE-A-BALL (February 2017)

The MVSC hosted their first Operation Dodge-a-ball on February 18th. Nine teams competed in the University Recreation Activity Center for a double elimination dodgeball fest. Veterans, Family members and friends came out to show who was the best in the first of many great events of the Spring semester. Teams ranged from the Shooting club, squads of ROTC cadets, and the True Blue Dodgeball Team.

GS MILITARY CANNED FOOD DRIVE (November 2016)

From the 31st of October to the 18th of November, the Student Veterans Association partnered with the Cadet Association to host a Canned Food Drive for the Statesboro Food Bank. Placing baskets all around Georgia Southern Campus, the organizations raised over 1000 items to donate, helping the families of the Bulloch County celebrate the holidays. The organizations also helped to count incoming items on the day of the turn in.

INAUGURAL VETERANS DAY CEREMONY (November 2016)

On the 11th of November, the MVSC hosted Georgia Southern’s first Veterans Day Ceremony to honor all the active military and student veterans at Georgia Southern University. Students, faculty and members of the community were treated to a ceremony highlighting the acceptance of the many who have sacrificed for the nation.  The pathway of Sweetheart Circle was lined with American flags, representing the nearly 600 veterans on Georgia Southern. Special guests included Mr. Marvin Mills Jr., a former US Army Captain, the Georgia Southern Symphonic Wind Ensemble with Conductor Dr. Robert Dunham, and Freedom, the Georgia Southern University mascot.

WORK OUT WITH YOUR SERVICE MEN & WOMEN (September 2016)

On the 27th of September, Georgia Southern University Health Services, Campus Recreation, The Eagle Battalion and MVSC partnered to host this event. Georgia Southern has over 500 Military and Student Veterans. The program was centered around supporting our service men & women, raising awareness for Mental Health, Trauma Related Injury, PTSD as well as demonstrate our respect through an alternative training style workout. With the success of this event, we look forward to the future as we continue our partnerships across campus.

MVSC Ribbon Cutting Ceremony (August 2016)

On the 24th of August the MVSC officially opened its doors with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The Center Staff appreciated the attendance of University Leadership, Dr. David Snow of the Board of Regents, Community partners including the American Legion and Business Innovation Group, student veterans, and Freedom, our university mascot.

Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) William Roberts, Associate Dean of Students for Military Affairs sent a message to all the student veterans of Georgia Southern in saying, “You have served us and now we will serve you. You are our mission and we will place you first. We will not accept defeat. We will not quit on you. You are our comrade and we will not leave you. You are an Eagle and we will do all that we can to help you succeed.”

The staff of the MVSC used this opportunity to not only reach out to students who were new to Georgia Southern, but also to students who weren’t aware of the resources being provided to Military-Connected students of the Eagle Nation.

Benning to Gordon Relay (March 2016)

On Thursday March 11th a group of 7 runners began their first leg of the 250+ mile journey from Ft. Benning to Ft Gordon.  The group consisting of anyone from 10 to 68 years of ages would complete a 3 mile segment over the course of 3 days in order to arrive at their final destination.  This is the fourth year the event has been held, while earning over $20,000 for Fort Gordon Warrior Transition Battalion and the Fisher House. On Saturday March 12, members of the Student Veterans Association, Eagle Battalion and the Military and Veteran Student Center joined for the Portal Georgia leg of the run.

After the run, William Roberts, Associate Dean of Students for Military Affairs said, “I’m really glad that the SVA chose this event to support. Both the Fisher House and the Warrior Transition Unit do a great job of taking care of our Soldiers and their families. It was an honor for us to be a part of this effort.” This was the second year that Georgia Southern has taken part to support this worthy cause, and next year, the hope is for even greater participation from the Eagles, and maybe a few more clouds on the course!

 

All American Veteran Cook Out (April 2016)

On April 23rd from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. the American Legion held a cookout for all past/present servicemen and their immediate family.  The event was held at the Dexter Allen Post in Statesboro GA.

The Eagle Battalion hosted the annual Freedom Run early Saturday morning. Runners came from across the state to support Georgia Southern’s Eagle Battalion.

Spring 2016 Eagle’s R&R (May 2016)

On May 1st the Military and Veteran Student Center and the Student Veterans Association in conjunction with the Clubhouse hosted the 1st Eagle’s rest and relaxation.  This event brought together Veterans, Reservist, National Guard, active duty, ROTC, family and friends to join together and enjoy a little free food and entertainment before finals week.
