Service-Learning

Service-learning is a "for-credit" educational experience. Learning through service enables students to apply academic knowledge and critical thinking skills to meet genuine community needs. Faculty-guided reflection and assessment, combined with community partner enrichment, helps students gain a deeper understanding of course content, develop their sense of self-efficacy, and build their future as active citizens.

Community service or volunteerism can be transformed into service-learning by linking it to academic material and adding a reflection component.

For example, sorting food at a local food bank becomes service-learning when a Sociology Professor requires her students to explore the root causes of poverty in this area and to link the service experience to what is being learned in the classroom. Students may reflect upon their experiences through journal entries, class discussions, or online blogs.

Service-Learning IS... Service-Learning IS NOT...

An effective pedagogy A waste of time
