Lofts
Overview
The Department of University Housing does not encourage lofts, although some students may choose to have a loft in their residence hall room to utilize additional space and individualize their room. What is a Loft? A loft is a raised frame built up from the floor to hold a bed.
Note: Loft Beds are not allowed in Southern Pines, Southern Courtyard, or University Villas. Beds in Eagle Village will be junior lofts which are adjustable to three different heights.
Loft Request Form - This must be filled out and brought with you at the time of Fall room Check-in.
Loft Guidelines
- Prior to construction, all residents of the room that will house a loft must agree to its construction and abide by the loft policy.
- The University does not endorse any loft vender company.
- No loft construction may occur during quiet hours.
- Department of Housing reserves the right to disapprove of any loft.
- Residents must use the bed frame provided by Georgia Southern University.
- Bed legs may be removed by students and must be stored together with nuts and bolts in their rooms.
- Georgia Southern University will provide no materials, assistance, or tools.
- No loft should be constructed in a manner that alters or damages the condition of the room (i.e., bolting to the floor, walls or ceiling) or interferes with the operation of any windows, heating and air conditioning units, or doors.
- Removal or modification of electrical fixtures or wiring is prohibited.
- The Department of Housing accepts no responsibility for loft construction decisions made by students or loft contractors.
- Ladders for loft access are optional. Consideration should be given in the event of emergency or fire situations. When used, ladders must be securely attached to the loft. Construction of the ladder must be substantial enough to support weight in excess of maximum anticipated loads.
- Residents are strongly encouraged to use side rails for lofts because side rails provide extra assurance from injuries caused by accidentally falling out of bed. Side rails must be securely attached to the loft and must be substantial enough to support weight in excess of maximum anticipated loads
- Lofts cannot be enclosed in any way that could impede egress in an emergency.
- Flammable decoration materials, such as paneling, netting, curtains, posters, etc., are not to be attached to the loft.
- In the event that a loft is disassembled and moved from one room to another, the person who owns the loft must notify the Department of Housing that this loft is being moved and needs to be re-inspected. All lofts that have been moved must be re-inspected.
Please Note: Not all spaces are able to handle two lofts. It is the recommendation of University Housing that you arrive to your room prior to construction of any loft.
Removal Guidelines
- Residents are responsible for the removal of lofts. Loft must be removed prior to checkout.
- Loft removal may not occur during quiet hours.
- After removal of the loft, the room must be restored to its original condition; all beds must be properly reassembled and moved into the original locations.
