Safety and Security Measures in
Georgia Southern University’s Residence Halls

No university can guarantee the safety of its students. Students are encouraged to exercise caution at all times. It is recommended that students avoid isolated areas and travel with others. The University offers an escort service to students. Call 912/478-5234 for more information.

The following are safety and security measures offered in the residence halls at Georgia Southern University:

  • Education
    • All residence halls have two planned fire drills and one planned tornado drill a semester
    • University Housing trains staff members on safety and security in the residence halls
    • Educational programs on safety and security are presented in all residence halls
    • Passive programs are offered on safety (TWIRL, Bulletin Board, Flyers, etc.)
  • Physical Facilities
    • Exterior door keys are changed each year
    • All exterior doors are locked 24/7
    • Each apartment or room door has as a door viewer (peep hole)
    • All newly constructed residence halls have surveillance cameras
    • SC, SP, and EV students have a panic button in the living room that is connected directly to University Police
    • Exterior phones are located outside residence halls
    • Keys cannot be duplicated off campus
  • Staff
    • Night Supervisors make rounds of all residence halls and check exterior doors.
    • University Police officers make regular rounds in all residence halls.
    • All staff members wear a photo ID and name tag
    • Resident Advisors are on duty nightly
    • Building Directors and the central office staff rotate an on call duty system
    • Police escort service is available on campus
    • Staff members are trained on how to enter a room
    • Housekeeping services are available 24/7 for spills and clean ups
  • Partnerships
    • DUH staff members meet regularly with the University Police
    • University Police makes two rounds a day in the residence halls
    • DUH works with the Counseling Center staff for students who exhibit concerning behavior
    • ADA students are given special instructions regarding their personal safety
    • ADA rooms are specially marked for easy identification
  • Miscellaneous
    • Residence halls have an escort policy for members of the opposite sex
    • Each residence hall has a safety kit
    • DUH utilizes a radio system that communicates to all DUH staff as well as Public Safety and Physical Plant
Additional Safety Tips
  • Do not walk, jog, or bike in isolated areas
  • Students are encouraged to keep room/apartment doors locked at all times
  • Immediately report doors that do not close or lock, lights that do not work, or any other security problems
