University Housing

Safety and Security

Your safety is very important while living on campus. As a residence hall student, you are responsible for assisting in the creation of a safe living environment. The Department of University Housing will help create a safer atmosphere for residence hall students by providing the following:

Fire Safety
All the residence halls conduct two fire drills a semester to ensure students are aware of how to exit the building in a case of a fire. Evacuation routes and student action requirements are posted in each room or apartment. Students not complying with these regulations are documented for a Student Conduct Code violation. Smoke detectors are installed in the Residence halls. Tampering with or removing smoke alarms or pulling fire alarms without cause are violations of the Student Conduct Code and will result in judicial action!

Exterior Doors, Keys, and Escort Policy
All residence hall exterior doors and gates are locked 24 hours a day. Upon check-in, you are provided one key to your room and one key to the exterior doors or gates. If a visitor would like to enter the residence hall to visit you, he or she will use the telephone located on the outside of the building to call you. You are responsible for escorting your guest at all times in the residence hall.

Tornado Drills
Tornado drills are conducted once a semester in all residential facilities. Your RA will indicate your responsibilities and where you should go in your hall during a tornado warning.

Night Supervisors
University Housing employs students to monitor the exteriors of all halls between 10:00 p.m and 4:00 a.m nightly. Night Supervisors ensure doors are not propped open and that university rules and regulations are not being violated.

Escort Program
University Police sponsors an escort service for all Georgia Southern Students. You may be escorted by a service officer to or from any location on campus between the hours of 6:00 p.m and 2:00 a.m. All students are encouraged to use this service.

Room Doors
You are encouraged to keep your residence hall room door locked at all times, especially when you are sleeping or in the bathroom. It takes less then 30 seconds for a theft to take place. Only students assigned to a room are issued keys to that room.

Lost Keys
Students whose keys are stolen or lost should report this to a hall staff member immediately. Students will have 24 hours to locate their keys. After 24 hours, the room door lock will be changed and new keys will be issued. Students who lose their keys will be charged for the changed lock.

Always Remember...
For the safety and protection of you and your new neighbors, you should remember the following policies:

  1. Alcohol and other drugs: Only students 21 and older may possess and consume alcohol in the residence halls, and they may do so only in the privacy of their own rooms. Kegs, beerballs, and funnels are prohibited. Other drugs (except over-the-counter medications and those for which you have prescriptions) are prohibited. Violations of this policy could result in suspensions or dismissal from University Housing and Georgia Southern University.

  2. Candles, incense, and incense burners are prohibited.

  3. Firearms and explosives: Firearms, fireworks, weapons, ammunition, explosives, paint guns, flammable liquids and cylinders containing gas are all prohibited in University Housing.

  4. Extension cords and multi-plug adapters: Extension cords and multi-plug adaptors are prohibited. A maximum of one power strip per person with surge protector is permitted in each residence hall room.

  5. All guests to a residential facility must be escorted. Visitors of the opposite gender may visit a room at any time as mutually agreed upon by all roommates. Visitors of the opposite gender may not spend the night. Visitors must be escorted by their host all times. Parents are welcome in the Residence halls at all times. However, they must be escorted by their students. Overnight guests of the same gender must be registered at the residence hall's front desk or office.

  6. Report any concerns and all suspicious activity to residential hall staff or the University Police.

  7. Smoking: All residence halls are designed as non-smoking. Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the buildings, including student rooms. Students who smoke will be permitted to live in student housing, however, they may only smoke when they are outside of the building or complex.
