Residence Hall Computing
In-Room Connections
All residential facilities have Internet connections in the rooms. Some have this connecting via standard
Ethernet and others via Wireless Ethernet. This service is provided at no additional charge. When purchasing a
card, regardless of the type, be sure its compatible with your computer’s operating system. If you have
difficulty finding an appropriate card to purchase in your hometown, don’t worry. The university store carries
compatible cards for purchase.
When connecting to our network for the first time, students will download to their computers a program called
Clean Access. Clean Access is a program that will require students to login, as well as ensure the students
have all the required software updated and virus protection. Once this is done, students will be connected to
the network.
This process takes about 20 seconds if your computer is in compliance! Therefore, we encourage you to take your
personal computer in for a professional tune-up before attending Georgia Southern. Our Clean Access system will
prevent your computer from connecting to our ResNet unless you have current anti-virus software installed and
updated, Windows updates, as well as spyware removed from your computer. In our Residence Halls, your personal
computer will be validated against these requirements weekly. Before you arrive on campus, you may download Symantec Anti-virus free from the Georgia Southern Website at
https://download.georgiasouthern.edu to beat the rush when
you get here. Please read the detailed information in the important announcement about these requirements
here: http://www.gsuhousing.com/resNet/internet.php
Internet Connection Types
Wireless: Brannen and University Villas (802.11b compliant)
Ethernet: Eagle Village, Kennedy, Sanford, Southern Courtyard,
Southern Pines, Watson
Computer Labs
In addition to the computer labs in academic buildings, residence hall students have access to computer labs
in the halls where they live. These computers are provided as a direct result of your "Student Technology Fee
@ work!" There is no additional cost to use these labs which feature computers with access to the Internet and
laser printers. Many of the computers have academic software loaded.
E-Mail
E-mail is the official method of communication by the University departments (such as housing) to students.
All students who attend Georgia Southern University will be assigned an e-mail address at registration.
Peer-To-Peer Computing
"Peer to Peer" software applications-such as Gnutella, BitTorrent, KaZaA, Morpheus, and Bearshare - are used to
share files across the Internet. Students are discouraged from using this type of software. Traffic created by
these types of applications cause significant bandwidth usage and as a result hinders or prevents use of the
campus networks for administrative and academic purposes, including direct uses by students (e.g registration,
library research, access to WebCT, etc.)
In addition, sharing copyrighted music or other files with these programs is illegal.
Virus Protection
Students are required to have virus protection software installed in their computer in order to connect to the
University Internet. Currently, Symantec Anti-virus is recommended for use on campus and is provided free of charge
to students.
