Sophie Cecile Johnson’s tenure at Georgia Southern University was quite unique. As the house director at Deal Hall (1933-1937), Sanford Hall (1937-1954), Cone Hall (1954-1956), and as Dean of men from 1935-1956, “Aunt Sophie” (1886-1968) was one of the most beloved personalities ever to grace our campus. The Wadley, Georgia native taught in her home-town school system prior to coming to South Georgia Teachers College. Always ready to offer a cup of coffee, some motherly advice, or even a friendly shoulder to cry on, Aunt Sophie's service and memory certainly warranted the Johnson Hall dedication ceremony in 1970.
