Community Leaders

The search process for Fall 2009 is under way! University Housing is building a new framework for success and is changing it’s staffing for next year. Replacing Resident Advisors will be our new Community Leaders.

The Community Leader (CL) is a vital member of the Georgia Southern Department of University Housing Staff. The CL is a live-in member of the Department of University Housing Staff and works with a group of students in one of the residence halls. The CL works with the Department of University Housing and Resident Directors in establishing a positive living environment for the resident students.

The CL is primarily involved in creating a positive environment by engaging members of the community. In order to accomplish this, the CL is expected to play a variety of constantly changing roles by serving as a helper, advisor, mentor and resource. Due to the nature of the work involved, the CL must be flexible and creative in meeting residents' needs. The position requires a serious time commitment and willingness to be available and accessible to other students

Qualifications
  1. 1. A resident of a Georgia Southern residence hall for at least one semester, a resident advisor at another institution or significant leadership experience/role;
  2. Ability to work in a diverse environment.
  3. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  4. Sensitivity to students’ growth and developmental needs in the University and residence halls setting.
  5. In support of academic excellence, CLs must have a 2.5 GPA.
  6. Abide by the academic policy for Community Leaders as described in this document.
  7. Clear discipline record.

Requirements
  • Academic Standards: The Department of University Housing recognizes that a students' first obligation should be towards his or her scholastic endeavors. Work for the Department of University Housing should not impede the students' academic progress toward their degree. As a Community Leader, the following academic requirements are upheld:
    • Enroll for an academic load of 12-17 hours, and not carry an academic overload of more than 17 hours during the first semester of employment. After the first semester of employment, must have approval of supervising Resident Director in order to carry an academic overload
    • Maintain a GPA of 2.5 during and prior to the period of employment
  • GSU 2222: Each Community Leader must enroll and successfully complete GSU 2222. It is strongly encouraged that interested students enroll immediately for the course prior to serving as a CL. Those having taken the course will be better prepared for service as a CL or other student leadership position on campus. The CL is responsible for tuition and books for the class. This course must be passed with a "C" or better. The objectives of the course are to provide an overview of the student personnel profession, leadership skills needed for a peer helping position, personal and group advising skills, and principles of community development/student growth. This course is strongly recommended for any leadership position on campus. The course will add value to any chosen career path.
  • Outside Involvement: Frequently, members of the Department of University Housing Staff are individuals who are involved in many facets of campus life, leadership, sports and work. The CL position demands a significant time and energy commitment which should not detract from student academic performance. In support of your success as a student and as a staff member, University Housing reserves the right to limit your extracurricular involvement. Involvement outside of your academic pursuits should not interfere with your obligation to your residents and the position. Employment outside of the department is limited only to those staff members who have successfully completed a semester of employment and have sought approval in advance from their direct supervisor. First semester staff members may work limited hours at a desk within the residence halls if there are hours available.
  • Term of Employment: Community Leaders (CLs) are hired on a year-to-year basis. CLs are at will employees and will be subject to semi-annual reviews of job performance by supervising Resident Director. Continued employment from one year to the next will be determined by these evaluations in conjunction with a returning staff interview process.

  • Each Community Leader (CL) will receive a stipend of $5800. This stipend may be distributed as a room credit, a monthly pay check, or a combination of the two (depending on the cost of the assigned room).

Responsibilities
  • Time Committment: The CL position is to be the principle non-academic activity. The CL is expected to:
    • Be available, accessible to, and regularly initiate contact with community members.
    • Remain on his/her floor in the Residence Hall during the weekdays and or weekends according to the duty schedule and as required by the Resident Director. The Resident Director must be informed when an CL plans to be out of the building overnight. Requests to be out of the building overnight must be approved by the Resident Director.
    • Remain in the hall until building is deemed closed by Coordinator of Residential Education or designee preceding vacation periods (Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Spring Break, Summer Closing), and return early to open the halls after a vacation break. Requests to leave early or return late must be submitted in writing and approved in advance by the Resident Director.
    • Participate in extra-curricular activities in such a way that they will not conflict with the CL position. (See number 3 under Requirements).
    • Attend regular staff meetings, training sessions and other meetings as required by the Coordinator of Residential Education and Resident Director.
  • Creating Community: The CL is expected to promote an atmosphere conducive to individual and group development. The Cl is expected to:
    • Be available to students for consultation, but recognize personal limits, while maintaining confidentiality.
    • Know every student in his/her assigned area.
    • Implement the standards of the Student Success Initiative.
    • Maintain an attitude of sincere interest in the residents.
    • Be aware of and report to the Resident Director any illness, abnormal behavior, long absences or special concerns.
    • Facilitate positive and proactive social interaction among residents.
    • Know campus resources that are available to help students and be able to effectively refer students for assistance.
    • h)Implement social programming expectations of area/building.
    • Development of the learning community (in applicable buildings).
    • Actively participate in and support the Residence Hall Association and Hall Council.
    • Promote and maintain a community that is open to differences.
  • Administrative Duties: : The CL is administratively responsible to the Resident Director and secondarily to the Coordinator of Residential Education. He/she is expected to:
    • Complete a room-to-room check periodically for facility related issues and report problems as directed.
    • Report and follow up on all necessary repairs and housekeeping problems as specified by the Resident Director.
    • Complete reports as specified by the Resident Director.
    • Document all behavioral infractions in a timely manner to the Resident Director.
    • Be familiar with and utilize the Department’s Emergency Notification Chart and Emergency Procedures.
    • Maintain regular office hours as specified in the duty schedule and as specified by the Resident Director.
    • Perform any duties requested by the Coordinator of Residential Education/Resident Director that relates to the operation of the hall.
    • Abide by all key policies as outlined in the staff manual.
  • Personal Behavior: By accepting employment with the Department of University Housing, the CL has accepted the responsibility to know, understand and abide by Georgia Southern's policies, procedures and regulations. CLs are responsible for all materials and information provided in the staff manual, including the corrective action process. CLs serve as role models and their behavior should convey an image of responsibility and maturity.

    I understand that the Department of University Housing may view my “Facebook”, “My Space”, or other public online journals/blogs, Instant Messages, and profiles for appropriate content related to the resident advisor position. Probation or dismissal may be taken for photos, “groups”, or other content (including “wall” postings), which violate the conditions of this contract or the Student Code of Conduct. This includes, but is not limited to depictions of underage or excessive alcohol use, illegal drugs references, and intolerant behaviors.

    Violations of regulations by CLs, encouragement of residents to violate Georgia Southern policy, or knowledge of violations without reporting them will not be tolerated and could result in immediate termination. A CL is expected to:
    • Assist students in knowing what is expected of them and the reasons for these expectations.
    • Attempt to create an environment that promotes consideration and respect for others
    • Attempt to create an environment which promotes consideration and respect for others.
    • Confront all behavioral infractions and follow up with appropriate procedures.
    • Set an example by adhering to the rules and regulations of Georgia Southern University.
  • Miscellaneous Due to the unpredictable nature of the work, Community Leaders will be asked to participate in other duties as required to meet the goals and objectives of the Department of University Housing.
