Peer Tutor
Position Description

General Description:
Peer Tutors (PTs) are student staff members in the FYRE (Eagle Village) and PACE (Johnson) programs whose
focus is the academic success of residents. Working in conjunction with the Academic Mentor (AM) staff, PTs
provide specific topic tutoring in the halls. They tutor students, both individually and in groups, in one
or more subject areas (usually math, science and English).
Requirements:

The Peer Tutor position is not live-in. PTs must be currently enrolled in 12 or more credit hours.

The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.0.

PTs must enroll in between 12 and 18 hours, inclusive, each semester.

PTs must have demonstrated mastery in English (through ENGL 1102) or Math (through MATH 1441).

PTs must have an aptitude for tutoring and a strong desire to work with college students.
PTs serve as a role model both academically and personally and possess sensitivity to students’
growth and developmental needs while working in the University and residence hall settings.

PTs must have a clear discipline record.
Remuneration:
Salary for the position is $7.00/hour paid in bi-weekly installments throughout the academic year.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Peer Tutor is administratively responsible to the Programming and Research Graduate Assistant.
The position averages 10-15 hours a week during the academic semester, and the time commitment is
concentrated during weekday evenings. PTs may not take courses that meet more than one day a week
after 6 p.m. (Monday through Thursday) without permission from their supervisor. Specific duties
and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Tutoring:

Tutors in area of specialty for an average of 10 hours per week (Sunday through Thursday).

Completes the university’s tutor certification workshop, held during the fall semester.
Other:

PTs attend meetings with their supervisor, and AMs.

Outside, paid employment is limited during a PT’s first semester to no more than 5 hours per
week; after that time, any additional paid employment must be first approved by the PT’s
supervisor. Note that per University policy no student employee may hold more that 2 positions
with the institution and may only earn a maximum of 25 hours per week total between positions
held.
Evaluations:
All Peer Tutors will be evaluated at least two times per year by their supervisor.
Academic Requirements:
The minimum cumulative GPA for PTs is a 3.0. After being hired, PTs who do not maintain this GPA will be
placed on warning, probation or will be released based on the following criteria:
A PT who meets either of the following conditions will be placed on academic warning:
- Earns a term GPA between 2.75 and a 2.99 (inclusive) while still maintaining a cumulative
GPA of 3.0 or higher; or,
- Fails to complete 66 percent of hours attempted, the threshold for Satisfactory Academic
Progress (SAP) as defined by the university.
A PT who meets any one of the following conditions will be placed on academic probation:
- earns a term GPA of less than a 2.75;
- earns a cumulative GPA of less than a 3.0; or,
- meets either of the criteria for warning while already on warning.
A PT who meets any one of the following conditions will be released from his or her PT position:
- meets either of the criteria for warning while already on probation;
- earns a term GPA of less than 2.5.
In cases of warning and probation, PTs will be required to meet with the Academic Enhancement
Coordinator (AEC) in the Department of University Housing to discuss strategies for improving academic
performance. When a PT is released because of grades, he or she will be strongly encouraged to meet
with the AEC.
