University Housing


Housing Orientation Team (HOT), 8 positions available

Supervised by the SOAR Building Director, the Housing Orientation Team is made up of student employees who work with summer orientation. This position is important as it sets the tone and foundation for all incoming students who are to live in University Housing. The format of this position is to work each orientation with the possibility of working as a Desk Assistant when work is available. (Tentative employment dates are 5/19 - 7/26)

Tasks:
  1. Staff are required to live in Southern Pines on the nights of SOAR and living space will be reserved in Southern Pines for housing needs during the employment dates. A credit of $500 will be applied to their housing costs should they choose to live on-campus for the employment period. Those not living on-campus will not receive additional compensation to cover housing elsewhere, but must spend the night in Southern Pines on the nights of SOAR.
  2. Staff assist with the housing portion of the SOAR program including, but not limited to: desk hours, campus and residence hall tours, night rounds, door checks, key control, building and room preparation (laundry), office work, safety and security, nightly programming, and attending some SOAR events.
  3. Staff will provide customer service to guests, students, parents, and members of the campus community.
  4. Staff are required to be in the hall each night of orientation by 9 pm until 7 am the next morning.
  5. Staff will work a variety of roles and have various responsibilities. The ability to manage time effectively will be of the utmost importance.
  6. Staff will serve as tour guides who take groups of prospective students to on-campus buildings during SOAR sessions showing display rooms, common areas and describing various living options of the residence halls.
  7. Work with SOAR Parent Housing by making beds; removing linens and towels from rooms; washing, drying and folding linens; as well as setting up individual rooms (this will be work paid hourly).
  8. Other tasks as assigned.


Qualifications: Ability to communicate professionally and in a coherent manner. Possess a valid driver's license. Ability to understand and execute verbal instructions and to work autonomously on appointed tasks. Must have ability to negotiate stairs and lift at least 25 pounds. Must posses a cumulative GPA of at least 2.25 and meet academic requirements set forth if already employed by Housing. Must have a clear disciplinary record (all applicants must undergo a background check). Ability to communicate clearly, provide quality customer service, and strong time management skills. Students who have the availability to work long blocks of time (i.e. do not have class) will receive preference over those who cannot.

Salary Package: $500 room credit for on-campus summer housing and a $1100 stipend for completion of orientation work. Hourly work will be paid at $5.85/hour. Amount of hourly work will depend primarily on class schedule and ability to work evenings and some weekends.

  • So. Pines Single bedroom in a 2-bedroom apartment at a charge of $528.
  • So. Pines Single bedroom in a 4-bedroom apartment at a charge of $488.
Spring 2008 Current Staff Members: Complete the internal application and return to Watson Hall by 5pm on March 7, 2008. Fall 2009 Staff Members and all other students: Complete the application at the Student Employment Center beginning March 12, 2008. Deadline to apply is March 24, 2008.

We will need 4 staff members who are not taking classes and can work up to 40 hours/week and 4 staff members who may or may not be taking classes.

Please note that summer positions are guaranteed living space based on availability. Should the need arise Housing reserves the right to relocate student staff based on building and/or departmental needs.
