Night Supervisor Job Description
The Night Supervisor Program's (NSP) purpose is to secure buildings, protect property and students and
enforce University regulations by a regular patrol of assigned residential area. Due to the seriousness
of the job responsibilities, the NSP emoloyees are considered vital members of the Georgia Southern
University Department of University Housing Staff. All NSP employees are considered part-time student
staff members of the Department of University Housing. The following requirements and responsibilities
have been established for this position.
Department of University Housing Mission Statement: The Department of University Housing
provides Georgia Southern University student housing options which are affordable, convenient, and
well maintained. The campus residential community supports individual growth and development while
complementing the educational goals of Georgia Southern University.
Qualifications

A currently enrolled Georgia Southern University student taking a minimum of six (6) hours;

Adjusted Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 (In support of academic excellence,
preference will be given to candidates with an adjusted GPA of 2.25);

Clear disciplinary record and background check;
-
May not be working on-campus more than twenty-five (25) hours per week, and in no more
than two separate university positions;

Have completed one (1) semester of academic credit;
-
Complete six (6) hours of training prior to beginning the job and successful completion
of skills testing of information covered in training;

Strong leadership, communications, and interpersonal skills.

Hours
The hours are from 9:45 p.m. until 3:45 a.m. Each shift (there are five) works approximately 25 nights per
semester. Night Supervisors may work up to two (2) shifts, if approved by the Coordinator of the Night
Supervisor Program.
Academic Standards
The Department of University Housing recognizes that a student's first obligation should be to his or her
scholastic endeavors. Work for the Department of University Housing should not impede the student's academic
progress toward the degree. To be eligible to work for the Department of University Housing, students must
have an adjusted Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher. Once employed with the Department of University
Housing, students are expected to earn a minimum 2.0 GPA each semester. Students who fail to meet this
expectation will be either released or placed on probation with the following criteria:

A student who earns a semester GPA below 2.0 but maintains an adjusted GPA above 2.0 will be placed on
probation.

A student who meets neither of the following conditions will be released from his or her position
as a student employee in the Department of University Housing:
- earns an adjusted GPA below 2.0;
- earns below a 2.0 semester GPA while already on probation
Students on probation will be required to meet with the Academic Enhancement Coordinator. Those who are released
from their positions will be encouraged to meet with the Academic Enhancement Coordinator.
Continuing Education Requirements
The skills needed to successfully fulfill the Night Supervisor position are many. Therefore, Night
Supervisors are required to attend many skill development opportunities, including the following:

Nightly shift meetings and miscellaneous NSP meetings;

NSP Training: All NSP staff will be required to attend orientation and training prior to the
beginning of each semester. All NSP staff are expected to attend all orientation/training
activities that may occur during their period of employment. This training takes precedence
over any and all extracurricular activities with which the NSP staff is involved;

In-service training for staff: The NSP staff will be required to attend 2 in-service programs
as determined by the supervisory personnel each semester.
Term of Employment
NSP Staff are hired on a semester-to-semester basis. Review of job performance will occur one (1) time per
semester by input from the Night Coordinators, Coordinator of the NSP, and the Director of the NSP. This review
will be used to help determine employment from one semester to the next.
Specific Duties

Ensure all paperwork on incident reports is completed and turned in at the end of the shift;

Computer labs, laundry rooms, study rooms, restrooms, lobbies, stairwells, and all hallways
and exterior doors should be checked during every round;

Respond to building emergencies, including audible fire alarms;
-
Inspect fire safety equipment during rounds (smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, etc.);
-
Ensure safety and security of buildings;
-
Support environment that is conducive to sleep and study;

Communicate needs/special issues/etc. with Night Coordinator, Coordinator and Director of NSP;
-
Report all violations of University regulations on incident reports;
-
Maintain a log and make entries pertaining to each round made throughout the residence halls;
-
Report needed repairs to the Dispatcher;
-
Communicate nightly with the other staff members of the residence halls to ensure safety and
well-being of residents;
-
Distribute printed materials as specified by the Department of University Housing;
-
Perform light housekeeping duties in residence hall (this includes picking up and removing trash,
etc.). Refuse bags may weigh as much as twenty-five (25) pounds;

Answer the telephone and/or radio transmissions in a professional manner;
-
Communicate effectively with students, staff and members of the Georgia Southern University community;
-
Other duties as assigned.
