General Description:
Academic Mentors (AMs) are student staff members in the Residential Interest Group (RIGs) program whose focus
is the academic success of residents. Working in conjunction with the Resident Advisor staff, AMs present
programs on academic resources and academic development in the halls. They tutor students, both individually
and in groups, in one or more subject areas.
Requirements:
- The Academic Mentor position is live-in. AMs will live in single rooms in Watson Pods.
- The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.0.
- AMs must enroll in between 12 and 18 hours, inclusive, each semester.
- AMs must successfully complete the GSU 2222 Preparing Students for University Service course
with a grade of C or better.
- AMs must have demostrated mastery in English (through ENGL 1102) or Math (through MATH 1441)
and at least one other subject.
- AMs must have an aptitude for tutoring and a strong desire to work with college students. AMs
serve as role models both academically and personally and posess sensitivity to students' growth
and developmental needs in the University and residence hall settings.
- AMs must have a clear discipline record.
Remuneration:
AMs in Watson will live in a double room by themselves and will be billed for the lower, double-room rate.
Salary for the position is $3,025 paid in bi-weekly installments throughout the academic year.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Academic Mentor is administratively responsible to the Programming and Research Graduate Assistant.
The position averages 13-15 hours a week during the academic semester, and the time commitment is concentrated
during weekday evenings. AMs may not take courses that meet more than one day a week after 6 p.m.
(Sunday through Thursday) without permission from their supervisor. Specific duties and responsibilities
include, but are not limited to the following:
Programming:
- Designs active and passive programs on academic development for the halls.
- Minimally, one active and passive program is required each month. Two of these programs must
be held in conjunction with an RA.
- AMs must participate in one community service project per semester.
Tutoring:
- Tutors in area of specialty for an average of 10 hours per week (Sunday through Thursday).
- Completes the University's tutor certification workshop, held during the fall semester.
Other:
- AMs must successfully complete the GSU 2222 Preparing Students for University Service course
with a grade of C or better.
- AMs will be required to return to campus early for training (approximately seven days
before classes begin in the Fall and one day in the Spring).
- AMs will be required to attend the organizational meeting during the Spring semester.
- AMs attend meetings with their supervisor, other AMs, and occasionally the RA staff.
- Outside, paid employment is limited during an AM's first semester to no more than 5 hours
per week; after that time, any additional paid employment must be first approved by the AM's
supervisor.
Evaluations:
All Academic Mentors will be evaluated at least two times per year by their supervisor.
Academic Requirements:
The minimum cumulative GPA for AMs is a 3.0. After being hired, AMs who do not maintain this GPA will be
placed on warning, probation or will be released based on the following criteria:
An AM who meets either of the following conditions will be placed on academic warning:
- Earns a term GPA between 2.75 and a 2.99 (inclusive) while still maintaining a cumulative
GPA of 3.0 or higher; or,
- Fails to complete 66 percent of hours attempted, the threshold for Satisfactory Academic
Progress (SAP) as defined by the university.
An AM who meets any one of the following conditions will be placed on academic probation:
- earns a term GPA of less than a 2.75;
- earns a cumulative GPA of less than a 3.0; or,
- meets either of the criteria for warning while already on warning.
An AM who meets any one of the following conditions will be released from his or her AM position:
- meets either of the criteria for warning while already on probation;
- earns a term GPA of less than 2.5.
In cases of warning and probation, AMs will be required to meet with the Coordinator of Academic
Initiatiaves and Assessment (CAIA) in the Department of University Housing to discuss strategies for improving
academic performance. When an AM is released because of grades, he or she will be strongly encouraged to meet
with the CAIA.
