Mission
The mission of Living/learning communities at Georgia Southern University is to create and extend learning opportunities outside of the classroom that heighten student intellectual and personal growth. Living/learning communities are purposeful attempts to integrate curricular and co-curricular experiences that complement and extend classroom learning. These communities foster faculty and resident interaction that enhances both intellectual and personal growth of each student... Each community is built around a specific field of study or area of interest and is structured so students have a high degree of involvement in the community. Living/learning Communities are designed exclusively for first-year students and have several services tailored to meet their needs.

Services of LLCs:
  • Reserved Courses
The biggest advantage of the Living/learning communities is the availability of reserved sections of general curriculum or major courses. These sections are reserved exclusively for students in a particular LLC. Taking courses together with people who share an interest provides for an intellectually stimulating environment both in and out of the classroom. Students enrolled in reserved sections can easily find study partners in roommates or friends down the hall, and instructors sometimes assign more group projects or otherwise modify their courses to take advantage of the reserved section format. Over 100 faculty and staff teach these reserved courses, sometimes in addition to their usual job responsibilities.
  • Table Talk Program
Another benefit of reserved courses is the “Table Talk” program. When a student enrolled in a reserved section eats lunch with his or her professor at Lakeside Café or Landrum dinning hall, both of their meals are free. Some faculty members make a point of eating with all of their students over the course of the semester.

  • Academic Mentors
In addition to traditional resident advisors, LLCs have academic mentors. AM's are high-ability, live-in staff members who provide in hall tutoring for students in English, math and other subjects.

  • National Research
Research indicates that there are many good reasons to choose a Living/Learning Community.
    • Compared with their peers who live off campus, students in Living/Learning Communities do better academically.
    • Students more likely to be satisfied with their college experience and therefore to stay in college at higher rates.
    • Students in LLCs also feel more comfortable approaching faculty members for advice and letters of recommendation.

There are three different types of LLC Options for first-year students:
  •   Residential Interest Groups (RIGs)
  •   Pursuing Academics, Community, and Excellence(PACE)
  •   First Year Residential Experience (FYRE)
