Residential Interest Groups (RIGS) Descriptions Required Courses
American Entrepreneur

What makes one successful in business? This RIG will focus on many aspects of American business, from the one-person shop to the multi-national conglomerate. In today's competitive work environment it is important to explore majors relevant to career interests and to develop connections with others interested in a business career. This RIG is open to both business majors and those interested in the business field.

BUSA1105: Introduction to Businessk ENG 1101, First-Year Seminar
BUGS (Biology Undergraduate Students) This RIG is for students majoring in Biology, including
pre-professional students (Pre-Medical, Pre-Dentistry,
Pre-Veterinary, Pre-Natural Resources, Pre-Optometry,
and Pre-Pharmacy). The focus is on current events in
Biology, engaged citizenship, responsible stewardship
and academic success. Interactions with fellow students
and faculty will enhance academic opportunities
and enjoyment with the University experience.

Biology I and Lab, CHEM 1145:
Principles of Chemistry I,
First-Year Seminar

Chemistry ELEmentS (Chemistry Educational Living Environment for Students):

This RIG is for students majoring in Chemistry, including pre-professional students (Pre-Medical, Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Veterinary, Pre-Optometry) as well as students wanting to attend graduate programs in any chemistry-related field. The relationship of chemistry to current events, such as alternative energies and environmental issues, and engagement in academic life are the hallmarks of the chemistry RIG. Supportive relationships between fellow students and faculty will provide a foundation for success.

CHEM 1145: Principles of Chemistry I
with Lab, ENG 1101, First-Year Seminar

CLASS ACT (College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences – Academic Community Team):

This RIG focuses on issues central to majors and
interests within the arts, humanities and social
sciences. This community is dedicated to providing
academic support and vocational exploration
through faculty involvement. Open to CLASS majors only.
POLS 1101: American Government,
PHIL 1030: Intro to Philosophy,
First-Year Seminar

Computer Connections:

Work and play in the 21st century have already been profoundly affected by digital technologies (computers and computer-based software). Who knows what the future has in store? Cyborgs? Virtual reality? 3D video games? The possibilities are staggering. Students in this RIG will learn the basics of information systems in two related computer science classes which help fulfill the Science, Math and Technology area of the Core. Meanwhile, in their first-year composition class, they will also be learning about cutting-edge communication that uses images, video, and sound along with text, studying social networking sites such as Facebook™ and MySpace™, blogs, YouTube™ videos, mp3s, and text messaging. Finally, in their First-Year Seminar, they will discuss the social and personal implications of digital technology. CISM 1120/1110: Computer Concepts and Applications,
ENGL 1101,
FYE 1220, (Open to all majors. AP English credit will not allow students to exempt ENG 1101)

Math PLUS (Math Positive Learning for Undergraduate Students):

This RIG is for students interested in math
related fields. The program focuses on developing
mentoring and advising relationships with
faculty and other students within the math discipline.
Math related community service projects,
on-site tutoring, field trips, and career exploration
are the focus of this RIG.

Recreational Living

What components make up a healthy lifestyle?
This RIG examines various aspects of a balanced
life: intellectual, spiritual, physical, social,
emotional, environmental, and occupational.
Students in this RIG have opportunities to participate
in field trips and other active excursions.
This RIG is open to Hospitality, Tourism, Family &
Consumer Science majors, and anyone interested
in active, healthy lifestyles.

SOCI 1101: Introduction to Sociology,
ENG 1101, First-Year Seminar
School House

As a 21st century future educator, you need a
prospective on the past, the pulse of the present,
and a vision for the future. Come join and
be a part of the School House (Education) RIG to
build and support a community of educators. Open to education majors and those interested in the education field.

MATH 1101: Intro to Math Modeling,
ENG 1101, First-Year Seminar
Pre-Med RIG (DOCS2B)

This RIG is for talented pre-med students seriously following one of the four-year pre-med courses of study. Hard-working, capable students committed to a rigorous science and mathematics curriculum will find the intellectual support needed to succeed in this very competitive course of study.
