Joseph E. Kennedy (1930-1997) was a State Senator, Regent, and Leader in Service to Georgia. Kennedy,
a native of Claxton, Georgia exemplified leadership, service and character, from the battlefields of
Korea to high office in his state capitol. A graduate from Georgia Military College, he earned 3
medals for service in Korea and the rank of captain in the US Army. As a Georgia Senator from
1967-1991 and president pro-tem for 8 years, he was honored statewide for outstanding leadership.
Devotion to South Georgians and dedication to opportunity through education inspired him to champion
the advancement of Georgia Southern as a University for the region. A legislative leader in building
the University System of Georgia, he was named by the Governor to the Board of Regents in March, 1997,
shortly before his death on June 19, 1997.
