Nine young women at the State Female Normal School (now Longwood University) founded Zeta Tau Alpha on October 15, 1898 with the desire of permanent friendships and perpetuation of sisterhood. Today, women in 232 collegiate chapters and more than 250 alumnae clubs and chapters continue to live the purpose of Zeta: to intensify friendship, promote happiness among its members, to perform such deeds and to mold such opinions as will conduce to the building up of a purer and nobler womanhood in the world.
