LEAD 2031: Principles of Leadership:
An African-American Male Perspective
The purpose of this interdisciplinary course is to introduce
students to the "nature and concept" of leadership. Students will gain a
broad understanding of the history and origins of leadership, theoretical
approaches to leadership, and the skills necessary to serve in leadership
roles. As students master the fundamentals of the concepts, they will be
encouraged to test their ability to apply these concepts to their own life
experiences.
The teaching foundation for this course defines leadership as a process, not
a position. Leadership involves collaborative relationships that lead to
collective action grounded in the shared values of people who work together
to effect positive change. Students will be challenged to think critically
about leadership through class discussion, group projects, reflective
papers, and more.
This course is not a course for the passive or those who want the teacher to
provide all of the answers. It seeks to engage you actively in the class, to
challenge you to challenge yourself, your peers… and your instructors.
The ultimate objective of this course, then, is to introduce you to the
exciting possibilities of leadership studies, and to fuel your desire and
ability to go on to make a positive impact on your world. This course should
serve as a cornerstone for the development of individuals who will be ready
and willing to accept the responsibilities of leadership in service to
society.
This is a special section of this course that will
focus on African-American Male leadership. In addition to learning the
nature and concept of leadership, you will have an opportunity to explore
and critically investigate what leadership means and does from the
African-American male perspective. Additionally, this course will have a
service learning component that requires outside of the classroom service
work. This will be a rewarding course for the student who is genuinely interested
in African-American male leadership and service.
