The Counseling and Career Development Center at Georgia
Southern is staffed by doctoral level
psychologists and master's level counselors, along with professional
support staff. On
this page you can read about each person's background, experience, and interests.

Jodi Caldwell, Ph.D., Assistant Director for Training
Dr. Caldwell received her doctorate degree in
Counseling Psychology in 2000 from Texas Tech University in
Lubbock, TX, where she also completed her pre-doctoral
internship. She joined the CCDC staff in August of 2000. In
addition to her role as the Assistant Director for Training, Dr.
Caldwell also serves as the Interim Director of Clinical
Services. Dr. Caldwell is the Chair of the university’s
Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and serves as the
President of the Board of Directors of the Statesboro Regional
Sexual Assault Center. On a national level, she represents the
Commission for Counseling & Psychological Services on the
Professional Development Committee of the American College
Personnel Association. Dr. Caldwell's clinical interests include
Women's issues, GLBT issues, Depression, Religious/Spiritual
issues in Counseling, Sexual Assault, and Vocational/Career
Counseling. Dr. Caldwell was the recipient of a 2005 Award of
Merit for "Excellence in Service to the Georgia Southern
University Community" and the 2006 “Commitment to Advocacy
Award” for dedication to the issue of Sexual Assault Education.
What is your favorite quote? I have too many to pick just one,
but my favorite poem is The Road Less Traveled, by Robert Frost.
What is your favorite dessert? Cannoli
What was your most embarrassing moment? Oy! Life is a series of
them. I am notorious for tripping, falling, banging into things, and occasionally
putting my foot in my mouth!
What is something that you wish you could do, but you just don't have
the nerve? Sky dive - I have no intentions of doing this because I
don't like heights. However, it does seem freeing.

Cheryl Donaldson
Mrs. Donaldson is a Senior Secretary for the CCDC, and she joined
the staff
in February of 1990. She greets students when they come to the Center,
makes sure they fill out the proper paperwork, and assists them in gaining
access to the help they need. Mrs. Donaldson also schedules appointments
for the entire staff, including three practicum students and six special
rooms. Additionally, she is responsible for the client database, processing
medical withdrawals, helping students with testing, and assisting with
other administrative duties when necessary.
What is your favorite quote?

Shannon Salter Fussell, Ph.D.
Dr. Fussell received her doctorate degree in Counseling Psychology in 2008 from
Auburn University in Auburn, AL, after completing her pre-doctoral
internship at the University Counseling Center at Florida State
University in Tallahassee, FL. She
joined the CCDC staff in September of 2008. Dr. Fussell's
clinical interests include Anxiety Disorders, Women's
Empowerment, Body Image, Career Development, College Student
Development, and Group Therapy.
What song do you sing along with the radio at the top of your lungs
while driving alone in your car? "Weary Blues" by Hank
Williams, Sr.
If you could take a one-week, all expense paid trip anywhere in the
world, where would it be? It's a toss-up between Italy and
Spain/Morocco.

Merry Gallagher, Ed.D.
Dr. Gallagher received her doctorate degree in Counseling Psychology from
the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass. She is
originally from Vermont, where she had a private practice and
taught at several colleges and universities. She moved to
Statesboro in 1993 and had been in private practice before
joining the Counseling Center in November of 2007. Dr. Gallagher
enjoys all aspects of working with college-age students.
What is one interesting fact about you? I perform in local
theater productions.
What song do you sing along with the radio at the top of your lungs
while driving alone in your car? All of them!
What is something that you wish you could do, but you just
don't have the nerve? Retire

Steven Jacobson, Ph.D.
Dr. Jacobson received his doctorate degree in Counseling Psychology in 2006 from
Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK, after completing his pre-doctoral internship
at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. He joined the CCDC staff in August of 2006.
Dr. Jacobson's clinical interests include Gender and Multicultural issues,
Depression, GLBT, Self-Esteem, and Group Counseling.
What is one interesting fact about you? I have been DJing for
dance clubs, wedding receptions, and community events for several years
(as “Wonderbread J”) and currently co-own a small DJ company
(Do Good DJs) that focuses on community involvement, non-profit fundraising,
and good music.
What do you think is the best television comedy show of all time? It’s a three way tie between Fantasy Island, Different Strokes,
and What’s Happening.
What song do you sing with the radio at the top of your lungs while
driving alone in your car? I was a big fan of New Edition, so Candy
Girl, Cool it Now, or Mr. Telephone Man.
What was your favorite Halloween costume? I pity the fool that
asks me about my favorite Halloween costume!!!!!! - ( Mr. T ).

Deborah Johnson
Mrs. Johnson is the CCDC Administrative Secretary, and she joined our
staff in December of 2000.
What is one interesting fact about you? I used to be very shy.
If you could take a one-week, all expense paid trip anywhere in the
world, where would it be? Ireland
What do you think is the best television comedy show of all time? Andy Griffith Show
What was your most embarrassing moment? There are too many to
pick from!!

David Matthews, Ph.D., Director
Dr. Matthews received his doctorate degree in Counseling Psychology in
1974 from the University
of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, where he also completed his internship. His responsibilities
include general administration, supervision of clinical and other programs,
and provision of clinical services. Dr. Matthews' areas of interest include Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity
Disorder, Clinical Assessment/Diagnosis, and Psychopharmacology.

Angela Ogburn, M.S.
Ms. Ogburn received her Master's degree in Clinical Psychology in 2005 from Georgia Southern University, after completing her practicum at GSU's Counseling and Career Development Center. She joined the CCDC staff in October of 2005. Ms. Ogburn is a Licensed Professional Counselor and her clinical interests include Anxiety Disorders, Women's Issues, Social Skills Training, Self-Exploration/Identity, and Couples Counseling. Ms. Ogburn serves as the CCDC's undergraduate Field Experience Coordinator, Sexual Assault Prevention Advocates advisor, and member of the University's Sexual
Assault Response Team.
What is one interesting fact about you? I play piano and guitar.
If you could take a one-week, all expense paid trip anywhere in the
world, where would it be? Mykonos Island, Greece.
What is your favorite quote? I collect quotes, so it's hard to
narrow it down to just one! Most recent best find-- "Hitch your wagon

What was your most embarrassing moment? The most recent one was
when my chocolate lab "got sick" on me at the beach. All the surrounding
kids found it hilarious, but their parents seemed to think differently!

Kimberly S. Rowan, Ph.D.
Dr. Rowan received her doctorate degree in Counseling
Psychology in 2007 from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, after completing her pre-doctoral internship at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Kim joined the CCDC staff in November of 2007. Dr. Rowan’s clinical interests include Diversity and Multiculturalism, Group Therapy, Interpersonal Process, Depression, Sexuality, Outreach,
Supervision, and working with Athletes.

What is one interesting fact about you? I played Division III college basketball and playing hoops is still a passion of mine.
If you could take a one-week, all expense paid trip anywhere in the world, where would it be? An adventure into the Australian outback.

K. Bryant Smalley, Psy.D.
Dr. Smalley received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Psychology from Georgia Southern University before attending Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL, where he earned a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology and a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.). Dr. Smalley's clinical interests include Depression, Anxiety, Men's issues, Multicultural/Diversity issues, Sexual Assault Education and Prevention, Body Image, and Identity Development. Dr. Smalley has clinical experience in rural and urban community mental health centers, as well as university counseling centers. His approach to therapy is grounded in humanistic principles, while integrating aspects of existential, cognitive-behavioral, and multicultural theories.

Scott A. Sokoloski, Ph.D.
Dr. Sokoloski received his doctorate degree in Counseling Psychology in 2007 from
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, after completing his pre-doctoral
internship at the Counseling and Psychological Services Center at Appalachian State
University in Boone, NC. He
joined the CCDC staff in August of 2008. Dr. Sokoloski's clinical interests
include Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Group Therapy, GLBTQ,
Diversity and Multiculturalism, Vocational/Career
Development, working with Non-Traditional Students, and the use of
Creative Expression in counseling.
What is one interesting fact about you? I have been a
professional musician since 1995, recorded two CDs, and have performed in venues in a
dozen states across the United States.

If you could take a one-week, all expense paid trip anywhere in the
world, where would it be? To all of the countries of my
heritage: England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Holland, and Poland.

Monica Williams, Ph.D.
Dr. Williams received her doctorate degree in Counseling
Psychology in 2009 from The University of Georgia in Athens,
Georgia, after completing her pre-doctoral internship at the
Student Counseling Services at Texas A&M University in College
Station, Texas. She joined the CCDC staff in August of 2009. Dr.
Williams’ clinical interests include Diversity and
Multiculturalism, Women's Empowerment, College Student
Development, Identity Development, Outreach, and Creative
Expression in counseling.
