Course Description:

The aim of this course is to provide students interested in psychological research with an opportunity to engage in the conduct of research typical in a university counseling center setting. Recent research projects conducted by our center include studies on the effect of counseling center services on student retention, barriers to utilization of counseling center services, and similarities/differences between parent and student expectations for college. An attempt will be made to provide students with exposure to all phases of the research process, including hypothesis formulation, review and discussion of relevant literature, project design and implementation, data entry and statistical analysis, discussion of results, and presentation of research findings through written report and oral presentation to Counseling Center staff.

To ensure a more in-depth exposure to the research process, students are encouraged to register for this experience for more than one semester. Students are expected to participate, as needed, in existing Counseling Center research projects. However, students who demonstrate the ability, eagerness, and willingness to work more independently will be supported and assisted with the development and implementation of their own research ideas (as appropriate to the Counseling Center setting). This experience is geared towards psychology students interested in sharpening their research skills and will likely be particularly beneficial for students interested in pursuing graduate work in Counseling or Clinical Psychology.

Course Requirements:

  1. Students are required to attend a weekly, one-hour research meeting (time TBA). One unexcused absence is allowed. The student's grade will be reduced by one letter grade for each additional unexcused absence. In addition to attendance, students will be expected to come to research meetings prepared, ready to discuss current research projects, and with any assigned tasks completed.
  2. Students will be required to complete all assigned research tasks in a timely fashion. You should be prepared to spend 3-6 hours per week outside of the research meeting engaged in research-related activities (e.g., literature searches, data entry). Beyond an initial warning, the course grade will be lowered by a letter each time it is necessary to meet individually to discuss incomplete or late tasks.
  3. By the end of the semester, students are required to have completed one of the following:
    • A poster summarizing a completed (or almost complete) project.
    • A research proposal outlining the rationale and design for a future project.
    • A literature review of a research topic relevant to the Counseling Center setting (e.g., The effect of Counseling Center outreach programs on reducing stress during exams).
  4. Students will be asked to attend one staff research meeting during the semester to discuss current research projects.
  5. Students will meet with the Counseling Center Research Coordinator, either formally or informally, at the mid-point and end of the semester to discuss their performance.
