Service Information

Career Services offers several programs and services at Georgia Southern University. We emphasize three primary areas in our mission to serve students:

  • Major Decision/Career Exploration — Helping students choose their major and define their career interests
  • Experiential Education — Providing students with the
    opportunity to gain relevant work experience while in school
  • Full-time Professional Employment— Assisting with the job search
    process from resume writing to interviewing.

Career Exploration

Career Exploration is a helpful way to assist students with issues such as choosing a major, career opportunities within majors and graduate/professional school planning.

Career Advising
Appointments are available for one-on-one career advising. Walk-in assistance is available Monday through Thursday from 8:00am to 6:00pm and Fridays from 8:00am to 5:00 pm.

Assessments
Focus is one example of the computerized assessment instruments available to determine the students' values, skills and abilities. The Georgia Career Information System (GCIS) is also available and allows students to learn about careers, majors, scholarships, financial aid and more in the state of Georgia. Career Resource Center (CRC)
The CRC is available to students Monday through Thursday from 8:00am to 6:00pm and from 8:00am to 5:00pm on Fridays. Resources include:

  • Major Binders — Contain a one page fact sheet for every major which describes job opportunities and the skills required.
  • Career Books — Publications about different career fields, grouped in the CRC by major area of study.
  • Job Search Resources — Books, guides, and directories to help students prepare for the job search process.
  • Company Literature — Employer profiles, directories, annual reports, and videotapes assist students in conducting company research.
  • Computer Lab with Internet Access — Available for students to look for jobs on-line, create résumés, research employers, and more.
  • Résumé Samples — Provide an example of what a résumé can contain. There are samples for most all majors at Georgia Southern.

Experiential Education

Experiential education provides students with relevant work experience.

Cooperative Education
Cooperative Education at Georgia Southern requires alternating or parallel semesters of work and school. This program allows students to obtain practical knowledge and to gain a competitive edge in the job market.
To be eligible for Cooperative Education students must have:

  • Obtained and maintain a 2.5 GPA
  • Completed 30 credit hours
  • Completed one semester of course work at the institution
  • Have the ability to work at least 2 work rotations or 4 parallel semesters

Many employers require three semesters or twelve months of work. Some Co-op employers include:

  • Rayonier
  • TIMKEN
  • Great Dane
  • Southern Company
  • Corps of Engineers

Our office also acts as a clearinghouse for paid internships by assisting students in locating internship positions to gain relevant experience within their field.

Professional Employment

Professional employment covers the entire job search process from creating a professional résumé to on-campus interviews with approximately 100 different companies each year.

Services include:

  • Workshops — Topics include Resume Writing, Job
    Search Strategies, Interviewing Skills, Dining Etiquette, and Salary Negotiation.
  • On-Campus Recruitment — Provides students the opportunity to meet with recruiters from all industries including employers from school systems, public relations, engineering, hotel/restaurant management, communication arts, state and federal government, business, allied health, social science, sports/recreation, technology, military, non-profit agencies, and sciences.
  • Mock Interviews — Allow students to practice their
    interviewing skills with a professional staff member from our office. (Student may request interview be videotaped.)
  • Career Fairs — Give students the opportunity to network with employers. Our fairs include the Eagle Expo every October and February and the Graduate School fair in November
  • Web and Information Services —
    • EagleTRAK — An online résumé posting and job search database
    • InterviewTRAK & Résumé Referral Service on EagleTRAK — Allows students and alumni to post résumés on the Web for employers to view sign up for on-campus interviews and utilize the résumé referral service
    • ListServ electronic distribution lists and email communications — Provides information to students regarding skill development and employment opportunities
  • Employment Correspondence Critiquing Services — Gives students the chance to have their résumé, cover letter, and other job search collaterals critiqued before distribution to potential employers.
